The total weight of all the ants on Earth is about the same as the weight of all the humans on earth.

Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year!

We are excited to kick off this school year with new friends and families at Momilani Elementary School. We are excited the sounds of learning once again fill our classroom and expect this year to be an amazing experience for everyone. Our school operates in conjunction with Momilani School Community Council (SCC), Hui O Momilani (PTSO), Momilani Elementary School Foundation, and other supportive organizations. Approximately 25% of our students attend Momilani Elementary on geographic exceptions, commuting from as far away as Kaneohe, Waianae, Ewa Beach, and Wahiawa.

Our community of learners is motivated to build quality relationships, willing to take risks, empowered to think critically, solve problems, make decisions, and assume responsibility for a quality education. Learning is nurtured in a safe, positive, caring environment where democratic ideals, learning styles, and multiple intelligences are respected and encouraged. Students, teachers, staff, parents, and the community demonstrate a sense of unity, harmony, and mission, by accepting, respecting, and working collaboratively with one another.

This year we are continuing our focus on building the ‘Skills and Attributes of Today’s Learner’ (https://goo.gl/EC6FkI). In addition, we are committed to integrating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) education and the Write Tools writing process in our classrooms. Hopefully, we can build off of the STEAM units that were showcased at last year’s Curriculum Fair to deepen student thinking. Also, our school is fortunate to have advanced technology to support and enhance our students’ learning environment, as well as web-based learning platforms such as Wonders (Gr. K-6 Reading), Stepping Stones (Gr. K-5 Math), Go Math (Gr. 6), i-Ready (K-6 Reading/Math), Achieve 3000 (Gr. 3-6 KidBiz), MyAccess (Gr. 3-6 Writing), and Wordly Wise (Gr. 2-6 Vocabulary).

Working together to make Momilani a caring and responsive community has led to student and school success. As a result, we have been nationally recognized, receiving awards for National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence (1997, 2004, 2010) and National School Safety, Discipline and Drug Prevention (1997).  For six consecutive editions, Momilani was listed as Number 1 in Honolulu Magazine’s ranking of 255 public schools (2008-2013). Our school has once again been listed as the top school in the magazine’s ranking system last school year. We also received the Hawaii Blue Ribbon School Award (1996, 2002, 2010), Hawaii Distinguished School Award each year from 2004-2007, and honored 15 times with the DOE’s Annual Achievement Award (2008-2013). We look forward to continuing the journey with all of you. On behalf of the Momilani faculty and staff, here’s looking forward to another successful school year!

Aloha,

Mrs. Doreen Higa, Principal

Mr. Garrett Arakawa, Vice Principal
