Have you ever heard of the Great Aloha Run? It is 8.15 miles long. It occurs every year on the third Monday in February (Presidents’ Day). The course starts in downtown Honolulu on Nimitz Highway across from Aloha Tower, runs west on Nimitz Highway along Honolulu Harbor, under the Interstate H-1 viaduct near Honolulu International Airport, and along Kamehameha Highway. It finishes at the Aloha Stadium. Ever since its been founded in 1985, it has donated over $6.8 million to over 100 non-profit organizations. Every year, about 25,000 runners sign up to run in this event. Of that number about 5,000 US Armed Force members participate. The Great Aloha Run is the second largest road race in Hawaii, after the Honolulu Marathon. Our very own Fit Factory runs this event every year.
There is also the Keiki Run that is on Saturday, February June 17, 2017, the Saturday before the Great Aloha Run. It is a 1.5 mile race around the Neil Blaisdell Center. This year, 2,600 kids signed up so far and raised $34,500, which will benefit the fitness and nutrition programs at 115 Oahu schools. Ages 1 to ∞ can race. The packet pickup is on Friday, FebruaryJune 16 at Kona Commons Sports Authority and the registration is $15. The program starts at 7:20 and the race starts at 8:00. They have about 30 sponsors and supporters every year. The event offers a fundraising opportunity for our school’s physical fitness and nutrition education activities, as $15 of every registration will be donated to our school. In 2016, $35,000 was raised and distributed to 130 public and private schools on the island!
