Did You Know?

In the 1600’s students filled blank pages of scrapbooks with newspaper clippings, personal notes, dried flowers and hair as a yearbook.

Momilani Media Crew

The Media Crew is a service group at Momilani Elementary in which students learn about teamwork, collaboration, and communucation through authentic hands on media based projects. These projects require students to be dynamic problem solvers while expressing a more creative side through the use of 21st century digital skills.

“You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
― Maya Angelou

Originally, this group was brought together to produce the school yearbook. Prior to this the yearbook was created by parent volunteers. By having students create the yearbook we hope to provide them with a greater sense of ownership and responsibility. This project includes learning skills such as page layouts, file management, and photo editing.

In an effort to improve the quality of the yearbook, we began learning to take better photos by focusing on camera basics, rule of thirds, horizon lines, contrast and point of view. Understanding how to take a better photo made logical sense as a next step.

Quickly it branched out to include writing articles for the school website. Students became reporters and editors of the news, they became the voice of student life at Momilani. Each month the team discusses the article topics for the next update.Students sign up to write about, edit, and photograph the events around our school.

The latest projects being integrated into the Media Crew focus on video production. It began by producing the "End of the Year" video for the graduating class, in which students photos are put together as a look back at the time spent with us. Now we are preparing to branch out to record, edit, and produce other videos such as the grade level drama productions and instructinal videos.
